Nina's Tragedies
|Coming-of-age comedies about teenage boys with prurient desires for hot older women are a dime a dozen. Make that woman the boy's aunt, though, and now you've got something!
Or something. "Nina's Tragedies," a bittersweet comedy/drama from Israel, is kind of sweet and a little creepy in its attempt to convey adolescent yearning and loneliness. The titular Nina, though, is played by a winsome, beautiful actress named Ayelet Zorer, and her warm persona more than carries the film.
Nina's nephew is Nadav (Aviv Elkabeth), about 14 years old and beginning to develop that dirty-looking half-mustache that teenage boys (and the women of New Jersey) get. He is emerging as Ninasexual -- that is, Nina, his mother's urbane book-editor sister, is seemingly the only object of his desires. With the help of his oily grownup friend Menahem (Dov Navon), he spies on Nina regula... Read the entire review

The Skeleton Key

The Movie:
Mention the word voodoo and the first image that comes to mind, for most people, will be a little doll with a bunch of pins stuck in it. Voodoo (and particularly voodoo dolls) has been prevalent in movies for many years, but I'm not so sure that Hollywood's given people the right message about the subject. Most people, I imagine, wouldn't have any clue that voodoo is actually a religion that has many followers in the New Orleans area. They'd also probably have no idea what hoodoo is and the majority of people, in fact, probably have the impression that voodoo is actually what hoodoo really is. Magical spells and dolls that you can make to hurt someone you don't like. That's not voodoo, despite what Hollyw... Read the entire review

INTRODUCTION:
"You unlock this door with the key of imagination. Beyond it is another dimension, a dimension of sound, a dimension of sight, a dimension of mind. You're moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. You've just crossed over into the Twilight Zone."
After the conclusion of the third season of The Twilight Zone, Rod Serling's iconic show underwent numerous revisions to keep it on the air. The most notable of... Read the entire review

WWE Unforgiven 2005
|
Raw presented the eighth "Unforgiven" PPV in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on September 18th, 2005. There were a few significant events that occurred during this PPV.
Here's the card:
Intercontinental Championship Match [Ric Flair vs. Carlito] - There are two absolutes in the world of professional wrestling. One: it's fake (well, the outcomes of each match are predetermined - the "Montreal Screwjob" notwithstanding). Two: Ric Flair is THE MAN. At 56 years old, he can still wrestle rings around some of the newer guys. The Intercontinental Championship is the only belt he had yet to win. Great match.

Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers - Volume One Collection
|Recommended The Show: Everybody knows who Chip and Dale are. Well, at least everyone who even remotely knows a thing or two about Disney characters. The two chipmunks first appeared in "Private Pluto" from 1943 but it wasn't until 1947 that the little guys were actually given their names. Since then have become staple characters right along with Mickey, Donald and Goofy and have found their way into several cartoons.
In March of 1989 the pair got their own TV show with a wild cast of characters and a new adventure in every episode. Following the success of Ducktales, the shows were often aired back to back. The formula for both series was a little different, yet somehow familiar. Even though it tried to emulate Ducktales, it never really had the same overall quality. It seems only fitting though that since Scrooge McDuck's show just found its way onto DVD, that

Campfire
|Recommended 1981, Israel Rachel (Michaela Eshet) is slowly realizing that after the death of her husband life has become more and more difficult not just for her but for her two daughters as well. Considering a fresh start and perhaps a better future for her girls Rachel decides that the best thing to do is to apply for the new settlement everyone is talking about which is to be built somewhere on the West Bank. Unfortunately a single woman with a rather shaky "image" within the local community is anything but the perfect candidate as Rachel is told by the leader of the Zionist committee. On top of everything else Rachel's daughters can't seem to be able to stay out of trouble. During a traditional bonfire Tami (Hani Furstenburg) is nearly raped by a group of horny boys and warned not to tell anyone about it while Esti (Maya Mayron) is secretly making out with a soldier who as it ...Read the entire review

Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell
|Rent It If you're old enough to remember begging to stay up late in the late 1970s, then you're probably somewhat familiar with the term Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell. And no, it's not about a mass-produced pastry snack that you'll find at your corner supermarket.
Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell (damn, it's fun just to type it!) is a made for TV horror flick that aired on Halloween Night, 1978. It's notable in that it stars the always-cool Richard Crenna, the lovely yet difficult-to-pronounce Yvette Mimieux*, both of the Witch Mountain kids, and a really cute German Shepard pooch who, you guessed it, is the actual canine spawn of doggie Satan. Or something like that.
(*To me she'll always be the scantily-clad super-hottie from the original Time Machine.)
Barely over their brief moment of sorrow for a family dog found dead in ... Read the entire review

Tales of Tomorrow Collection Two of 1st Season Shows
From: Image Entertainment - Year: 1951-1952 - Rated: Not Rated - Release Date: November 01, 2005 Serious science fiction turns downright grim in these 13 episodes from the first season. The source material is iffy, but one can't expect much better. Fans of The Twilight Zone will definitely want to check these programs out. Amazon Compare|

Scary True Stories: Ten Haunting Tales from the Japanese Underground
From: Dark Sky Films - Year: 1991-1992 - Rated: Not Rated - Release Date: November 22, 2005 Never especially scary, there are still a few salvageable moments of creepiness here, but there aren't enough to spread over two hours. Production values are low-rent, and the effects are rather cheesy, diminishing any ability to sell the scary. A rental for diehard Japanese horror fans eager to see early work by Norio Tsuruta. Animals
From: Passion River - Year: 2003 - Rated: Not Rated - Release Date: November 22, 2005 - Features: Widescreen * The good news is that this is not an overbearingly manipulative PETA project, so the message that self-professed meat eater/farmer/filmmaker Jason Young tries to convey actually manages to present both sides of the emotional question about animals and their role as food. It is not always easy to watch, especially during the final moments, but the reality is still there. Questions aren't necessarily answered, and perhaps Young's agenda leans more dramatically one way than another, but the presentation seems to allow both sides of the argument equal voice. If you're stuck in the middle, however, then I imagine Animals will make you uncomfortable more than once... but it will make you think. It says something when a doc can do that. Highly recommended.|

Ran (Criterion Collection)
From: The Criterion Collection - Year: 1985 - Rated: Not Rated - Release Date: November 22, 2005 - Features: Anamorphic * Widescreen * Extras! * - Recommended! Perhaps, just as Hidetora, the Lear figure in Ran, had three sons, and Lear had three daughters, and Vito Corleone three sons, the DVD gods needed three releases of this magnificent achievement to get it right. The defining picture of Kurosawa's late period, Ran succeeds relentlessly on both the political and the domestic scales, as much a story of war as of a family coming undone from within. Criterion has finally favored us with a DVD release worthy of the movie's epic accomplishments - one of the great wrongs on DVD has been righted, and it's hard to think of a better release for this or any other year. From: Warner Home Video - Year: 1935 - Rated: Not Rated - Release Date: November 22, 2005 It takes a while to get to the eruption, but it's worth it. Some interesting character development doesn't hurt. It's an attractive transfer, but there is nothing in the extras department.|
